THE PAPER PROVIDES A REVIEW OF SOME OF THE LATEST TRENDS IN THE FIELD OF AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS. I) THERE HAS BEEN A RENEWED INTEREST IN ABSORPTION REFRIGERATION WITH WATER-LITHIUM BROMIDE SOLUTIONS BECAUSE OF THE CFC AND ENERGY ISSUES ; LATEST DEVELOPMENTS INCLUDE DIRECT FIRED AND DOUBLE-EFFECT MACHINES. II) COLD STORAGE MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO INSTALL LESSER REFRIGERATING CAPACITY AND TO USE ELECTRICITY AT REDUCED RATES AT NIGHT ; SENSIBLE OR LATENT STORAGE CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY SEVERAL METHODS. III) ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGIES CAN FULFIL SEVERAL FUNCTIONS SUCH AS CONTROLLING THE OPERATION OF COMPONENTS, MANAGING SAFETY MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS AND MONITORING THE OPERATIONAL VARIABLES. IV) NEW MODELS OF BURNERS ALLOW THE EMISSIONS OF POLLUTANTS SUCH AS NITROGEN DIOXIDE AND CARBON MONOXIDE TO BE KEPT LOW BY REDUCING THE COMBUSTION TEMPERATURE AND THE PARTIAL PRESSURE OF OXYGEN INSIDE THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER.
