Type of article: Article

Summary

A CONSIDERABLY GREATER HEAT EXCHANGER AREA IS REQUIRED FOR THE CONDENSATION OF A VAPOUR IN THE PRESENCE OF A NON-CONDENSABLE GAS SUCH AS AIR THAN FOR THE CONDENSATION OF A PURE VAPOUR. APPROXIMATE METHODS WHICH REDUCE CONSIDERABLY THE CALCULATIONS NECESSARY FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE REQUIRED HEAT EXCHANGER AREA CAN BE DERIVED FROM THE LIMITING CASES OF EITHER HEAT-OR MASS-TRANSFER-CONTROLLED CONDENSATION. THE CONDENSATION OF SUPERHEATED GAS-VAPOUR MIXTURES IS ALSO DISCUSSED. A COMPARISON OF THE APPROXIMATE METHODS WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA SHOWS SATISFACTORY AGREEMENT.
