Summary

Experience of arterial heat pipe application in thermal control systems of Russian spacecraft is presented. In the early 1970s, heat pipes developers faced some difficulties when designing heat pipes. Such difficulties regarded the vapour bubbles appearing inside heat pipe arteries that blocked the liquid circulation and caused the evaporator to dry out. The difficulties in arterial heat pipe designing were successfully solved by Lavochkin Association specialists. Different versions of arterial heat pipe design applied for special technical purposes are considered. Test conditions and operation duration of developed heat pipes are presented. List and history of arterial heat pipes applied in Russian spacecrafts, their application results and flight operation duration are presented.
