Atrium buildings from the perspective of function, indoor air quality, and energy use.

Author(s) : BRYN I.

Summary

The paper presents a brief history of atrium buildings and their use. Different atrium functions and some user surveys from commercial buildings are also discussed. Different functions require different levels of comfort, and consistency between the visual impression and the expected function of an atrium is a prerequisite. Experience shows that users will raise the atrium temperature if its atmosphere is an indoor one. Aspects of indoor air quality are discussed, with a special focus on thermal comfort, as it might be a complicated task to solve in atria with draughts, stratification, and short and long-wave radiation. Local climatization is discussed and shown as a solution. The relation between atrium temperature and energy consumption is shown for different building shapes.
