Summary
Barocaloric effects are nominally reversible thermal changes that occur in mechanically responsive materials when subjected to changes in hydrostatic pressure. These effects are analogous to the pressure-induced thermal changes in fluids that are exploited in current refrigerators, air-conditioners and heat pumps, but they promise higher energy efficiencies and obviate the need for ozone-depleting and greenhouse gases. Barocal Limited has recently designed and built the first proof-of-principle prototype barocaloric cooling and heating system, which is capable of delivering external cooling and heating of more than 5°C. This proof-of-principle prototype exploits a solid organic barocaloric material that displays colossal barocaloric effects under moderate applied pressures of 150 MPa.
