Summary

Description of an urban air-conditioning plant recently implemented in Portello, near Milan, in the framework of the New Milan trade fair. The main characteristics of this plant are as follows: (i) Refrigerating capacity: 14,000 kW (three R134A compressors); heating capacity: 18,000 kW; ice water flow rate: 2285 m3/hr: (ii) High efficiency at partial load (use of pre-rotation vanes); (iii) Energy savings: high-efficiency copper heat exchangers; compressors designed so as to take maximum advantage from the relatively low temperature of the water in cooling towers. (iv) Sophisticated control system, using a LINC (Local Intelligent Network Controller). The authors justify the design of the plant in comparison with other concepts, such as ice accumulation and cogeneration.
