Summary

THE USE OF PROGRAMMABLE MICROPROCESSORS OR COMPUTERS WITH FIELD INPUTS AND OUTPUTS OPERATING IN REALTIME CONSTITUTE AN INTELLIGENT CONTROL SYSTEM. THERE ARE MANY VARIATIONS THAT CAN BE CHARACTERIZED BY SIZE, FUNCTIONALITY OF CONTROL AND MAN-MACHINE INTERFACE, BY MEANS OF COMMUNICATION WITH FIELD DEVICES AND BY TYPE OF PROGRAM AND LANGUAGE. EXAMPLES OF SMALL, MEDIUM AND LARGE SYSTEMS ARE EXAMINED. FUNCTIONALITY OF CONTROL CAN RANGE FROM SIMPLE CONTROL OF A SINGLE HVAC UNIT TO OPTIMIZED CONTROL OF TOTAL SYSTEMS AND OPERATION OF COMPLEXES OF BUILDINGS.
