Summary

Refrigeration forms an essential part of the operation of a modern hospital. In most refrigeration plants in such large buildings the refrigeration is produced by compression and expansion of a refrigerant. Hitherto, investment and operating costs have increasingly been found to be the most important factor in choosing the type of refrigeration system and refrigerating machine. In the very near future, however, environmental policy will determine the direction in which solutions will be sought. The article looks at the history of refrigeration in hospitals, the principle of the refrigeration systems and the possible applications of absorption cooling.
