THE COMBITRANS SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED AND ITS CHARACTERISTICS ARE DETAILED. ITS SIMPLICITY, ITS SAFETY AND ITS FLEXIBILITY MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO BRING A NEW SOLUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMBINED RAIL/ROAD TRANSPORT (PIGGY BACK). ITS INFRASTRUCTURE DOES NOT IMPLY HEAVY INVESTMENTS, THERE IS NEITHER NEED FOR SPECIFIC HANDLING DEVICES NOR FINANCIAL RISK ; THUS, IT SEEMS POSSIBLE TO OFFER A TOTAL COMBINED TRANSPORT SYSTEM, PARTICULARLY WELL ADAPTED TO THE PRODUCTS UNDER CONTROLLED TEMPERATURE.
