Compact cryogenic cooling of liquid media down to -120 °C without freezing and without contamination of the coolant.

Summary

The paper presents a cooling method (down to -120 °C), for liquid nitrogen, using the gas itself. By separating the process of evaporation or boiling of the liquid nitrogen from the heat transfer between the coolant (nitrogen) and the process media, freezing was avoided in the system. The heat transfer took place in standardized plate heat exchangers, which made the system design comparably compact and light. The result is a patented system with a high surface to area ratio and hence a low dead volume that enables fast reacting and accurate temperature control.
