Summary

A SURVEY OF RESULTS WITH 70 PATIENTS WHO UNDERWENT CRYOSURGERY TO THE LIDS. THE BROAD BEVEL TIP OF A NITROUS OXIDE EYELID PROBE WAS USED FOR EXTENSIVE LESIONS AND THE SMALL EPILATION TIP FOR INDIVIDUAL LASHES. IN TRICHIASIS CASES WITH A THERMOCOUPLE AT THE LEVEL OF THE FOLLICLE ROOTS THE PROBE WAS APPLIED UNTIL 248 K (-25 DEG C) WAS REACHED, APPROXIMATELY 45 SECONDS, THEN THAWING AND REFREEZING TO 253 K (-20 DEG C). THE LASHES THEN EPILATED. THIS TREATMENT FOR ABERRANT LASHES AND SOME BENIGN LID LESIONS APPEARS TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE METHOD OF THERAPY AVAILABLE AT PRESENT. IT HAS A LOW COMPLICATION RATE IN NORMAL LIDS BUT SHOULD BE USED WITH CAUTION FOR OTHER EYE DISORDERS. C.R.F.
