Compressor performance and practical measurement.

Author(s) : HUNDY G.

Summary

With energy prices continually rising, the power consumption of refrigeration compressors is now starting to attract real interest. The logical steps for the achieving of real running cost reductions are: avoid refrigeration, correct system design, correct control philosophy, optimise components, proper operation and maintenance. Compressor efficiencies at the design point are often closely scrutinized and frequently the compressor choice for a particular application is based on such comparisons. It may be preferable to base comparisons on actual running conditions. Proper operation and maintenance play an important role in ensuring that correct efficiency is achieved throughout equipment life. Field measurements of compressors in various system types, made using the internal method are presented. This paper deals with some basic concepts, some of which are still not being properly recognised, implemented and field verified. To use available field performance analysing methods on refrigeration and air-conditioning systems can improve energy efficiency and decrease failure rates.
