Conception for a refrigerator insulated with silica aerogel and expanded polystyrene.

Summary

Expanded polystyrene by itself does not provide the degree of insulation required for today's domestic cooling appliances, but it lends itself to the formation of a shell with hollow channels. These can be filled with loose silica aerogel, a highly effective insulant that a number of feasibility studies have already shown to be ideal where environmental considerations are paramount. This conception offers considerable manufacturing advantages, compensated in part for the additional cost that the use of silica aerogel might involve. Recycling is much easier but is not presently taken into consideration to promote this new technique.
