Cryogenics-based energy storage concepts: evaluation using exergy-based methods.
Number: pap. n. 30

Summary
Increasing shares of highly intermittent non dispatchable renewable energy generation, and the consequent need for long duration bulk energy storage providing electricity at reasonable cost caused cryogenic energy storage to receive great interest in research nowadays. Cryogenics-based energy storage is a thermo-electric storage concept; excess electricity is used to liquefy a gas, which is stored at cryogenic temperature subsequently pressurized, regasified and expanded partially recovering the electricity within a cold power cycle. The paper aims at the evaluation of cryogenics-based energy storage concepts with exergy-based methods and economic analysis. Analyses are based on results gained in simulation performed by Aspen Plus®. Internal heat and cold recycle are revealed to bring along great benefits.
