Summary

Development of fusion reactors require large pumping speeds in the 1.E(-5) millibar pressure range, for the helium produced by the deuterium-tritium fuel reaction. The vacuum pumps must be clean, compatible with tritium and severe environmental conditions and have a high availability. Due to these requirements, cryopumping is one of the best solution. Some problems must be solved mainly concerning the sorption process required to pump helium and the limitation of the tritium inventory in the pumps. The system proposed consists of 24 cryopumps using the argon cryotrapping process to pump helium.
