Summary

SMALL DOMESTIC ELECTRIC DEHUMIDIFIERS CAN REMOVE MOISTURE AND PROVIDE BACKGROUND HEATING. TRIALS WERE UNDERTAKEN AND STARTED IN NOVEMBER 1982 AND THIS INTERIM REPORT WAS PREPARED TO SHOW THE PROGRESS. THREE TYPES OF MACHINE WERE ASSESSED AND THESE WERE SELECTED TO GIVE A RANGE OF EXTRACTION RATES FROM 1 TO 4 KG PER DAY. MONITORING SHOWED THAT THE EQUIPMENT DID LOWER THE MOISTURE LEVELS IN THE HOUSES SATISFACTORILY. OVER 80% OF THE HOUSEHOLDERS LIKED THE DEHUMIDIFIERS AND WOULD PAY FOR THE RUNNING COST THEMSELVES. THE ONE UNSATISFACTORY FEATURE WAS THE NOISE FROM THE UNITS.
