IN THE PAPER AN AXIAL COMPLIANCE MECHANISM IN THE FORM OF A BACK CHAMBER BELOW THE ORBITING SCROLL IS DISCUSSED. PRESSURIZATION OF THE BACK CHAMBER IS MODELLED. THE MODEL IS VALIDATED BY COMPARISON OF THE PREDICTED BACK CHAMBER PRESSURES WITH DYNAMIC PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS. THE EFFECT OF THE DYNAMIC PRESSURE IN THE BACK CHAMBER ON SCROLL COMPRESSOR PERFORMANCE OVER A WIDE RANGE OF GEOMETRIES AND OPERATING CONDITIONS IS DISCUSSED.
