EFFECT OF THERMOCOUPLE SHEATHS ON THE TEMPERATURE RESPONSE IN THERMAL PROPERTY MEASUREMENT.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE DISTURBANCE OF THE TEMPERATURE FIELD IN A CYLINDRICAL SPECIMEN DUE TO THE POSITION OF A THERMOCOUPLE AND DUE TO THE THERMAL PROPERTIES OF ITS INSULATING SHEATH WAS CALCULATED FOR BOTH CONTINUOUS AND PERIODIC HEATING. WHEN THE THERMAL DIFFUSIVITIES OF THE THERMOCOUPLE AND THE SHEATH ARE HIGHER/LOWER THAN THATOF THE SPECIMEN, THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SPECIMEN IS HIGHER/LOWER THAN WHEN THEY ARE EQUAL. THE ERRORS ARE SMALLER, THE CLOSER THE THERMAL DIFFUSIVITY OF THE SHEATH IS TO THAT OF THE SPECIMEN. THE ERRORS ARE REDUCED IF A SIDE-WALL THERMOCOUPLE IS SOME DISTANCE FROM THE SURFACE OF THE SPECIMEN.
