Summary

HIGH QUALITY INDOOR AIR IS ESSENTIAL IN COMBATTING THE SICK BUILDING SYNDROME WHICH CAUSES SINUS INFECTIONS, ITCHY EYES, HEADACHES AND EXCESSIVE FATIGUE IN SEALED-WINDOW AIR CONDITIONED SPACES. THE ARTICLE LISTS SOME OF THE CONTAMINANTS OR POLLUTANTS WHICH CAUSE THESE HUMAN AILMENTS: RESPIRABLE AIRBORNE PARTICLES, TOBACCO SMOKE, ASBESTOS FIBRES, ALLERGENS, INSECT FAECES, PATHOGENS, VAPOURS AND GASES SUCH AS CARBON DIOXIDE AND CARBON MONOXIDE, NITROGEN OXIDES AND OTHER VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. SEEING THAT THE GROWING COST OF POOR AIR QUALITY GIVES ADDED IMPORTANCE TO PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE, THE AUTHORS LIST SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT MEASURES TO BE TAKEN AND ONE INTERESTING MEASURE IS THE SEALING OF CRACKS AND OPENINGS AROUND BASEMENT DRAINS AND APERTURES IN ORDER TO AVOID RADON DECAY. IN SHORT, THE KEY TO GOOD INDOOR AIR QUALITY IS THE BUILDING OPERATOR. A. H. S.
