Energy saving in room air conditioning.

Author(s) : PAUL J.

Summary

Small window air-conditioners and split units for cooling air in residential and even large apartment and office buildings may not only spoil the architecture, the appearance of buildings and cause often extra construction costs, but uncontrollable refrigerant escapes affect the environment and foremost such room air coolers consume way too much energy. Based upon typical bad examples of such installations the paper shows simple means to reduce energy demand for cooling by some 50%. It must be in the interest of every country to avoid energy waste and room air-cooling has a huge potential for improving the situation. Bearing in mind that in hot (and humid) countries some 45% of the total electric energy is presently in demand for mere cooling of buildings, the importance of energy saving is evident. The investigation shows quantitatively the deficits of small so-called "air conditioners" and compares them to available state-of-the-art technologies. Such deficits of small air-conditioners cannot be neglected and should be a reason to take action against a horrendous waste of energy.
