Summary
The article investigates whether energy savings can be achieved by improving the insulation of the pipes of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems and, if so, how high the savings are and to what extent the investments involved pay off. This issue is vey topical today because under the EU directive on the overall energy efficiency of buildings the energy effectively consumed by cooling systems is included in the overall energy performance of the buildings. Against this backdrop, Armacell initiated a technical project to investigate the issue. Here the starting point was a typical application: chilled-water systems in air-conditioned buildings supplying chilled water with a nominal temperature of 6°C to the fan coils located in many places in the building.
