Fault detection and load monitoring in ventilation systems.

Summary

Faults in heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems comprise a range of problems that can increase energy consumption or equipment wear and can adversely affect building occupants. Faults can be detected by measuring equipment performance relative to a model-based prediction or relative to more common-sense expectations of what constitutes acceptable performance. The paper classifies faults for ventilating systems, consisting of fans, ducts, dampers, heat exchangers, and controls. It reviews two forms of models for the electric power used by ventilation system fans and proposes a third, that of correlating power with variable-speed-drive control signal.
