Summary

IN ORDER TO DISCOVER A DIFFERENT SECONDARY FLOW PATTERN HERETOFORE UNOBSERVED AND TO MEASURE TURBULENT STRESSES WHICH ARE THOUGHT TO GIVE RISE TO IT, AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY WAS CONDUCTED ON A FLOW IN A SQUARE DUCT WITH A RIB-ROUGHENED WALL. THE RESULTS OF VELOCITIES AND TURBULENT STRESSES ARE PRESENTED AND COMPARED WITH MEASUREMENTS OBTAINED IN A SMOOTH-WALLED DUCT. SMOOTH-WALLED DUCTS YIELD 8 SECONDARY FLOW CELLS IN A CROSS-SECTION. IN A DUCT WITH AROUGH WALL 2 LARGE CELLS APPEARED IN A CROSS-SECTION. (JSME INT. J., SER. II, JP., 31, N 2, 1988/05, 331-332.
