Summary

The paper reports on a technical and economical analysis on optimizing the performance of an electric power station operating on a combined thermal cycle in which heat recovered from the exhaust of a gas turbine is utilised to produce steam that is expanded in a second turbine. The proposed optimization refers to the introduction of an absorption refrigerating machine to cool the air feeding the gas engine, so that an increase in the electrical power can be achieved, with even a slight improvement of the thermal efficiency of the system. The absorption machine is operated by heat recovered from the gas turbine. Under tropical weather conditions, an 8% increase in the electric output results from this optimization with practically constant thermal efficiency; a very interesting payback period of less than 2 years is reported.
