Summary

SMALL SCALE, CLOSED-CYCLE STIRLING CRYOREFRIGERATORS HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY CONSTRUCTED. HOWEVER, LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THEIR LONG TERM BEHAVIOUR IN SERVICE. TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL, THE CONICAL REGENERATOR OF THE STIRLING REFRIGERATOR HAS BEEN MADE OF SCHOTT DURAN GLASS, WHICHMINIMIZES THE IMPURITIES OF THE WORKING GAS, HELIUM, COMPARED WITH THE PLASTIC MATERIALS NORMALLY USED. ANOTHER FEATURE IS THE USE OF A VITON DOUBLE-DIAPHRAGM COMPRESSOR. THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE ACHIEVED IS 34 K AT A NECESSARY ELECTRICAL INPUT POWER OF 280 W AT 150 CYCLES PER MINUTE AND AN AVERAGE HELIUM GAS PRESSURE OF 0.4 MEGAPASCAL. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS FOR LONG TERM OPERATION ARE GIVEN.
