Summary

Description of a technique for imaging magnetic flux lines in a superconductor, using electron holography. Harada and co-workers (Hitachi's Advance Research Laboratory) have successfully adapted their method to image magnetic vortices in an oxide superconductor. They have been able to follow the vortices in a film of BSCCO, up through the melting temperature of the flux lattice. At low temperatures they observed a roughly triangular lattice of vortices that moves a little when temperature rises and is able to settle in a new static configuration. However, at the irreversibility temperature (well below critical temperature), they saw the lattice fade away: magnetic flux lattices can melt.
