Summary
Ice slurry has an up to eightfold higher heat capacity than traditional liquid secondary refrigerants (heat transfer fluids - HTFs). The replacement of liquid only HTFs with ice-slurry could save energy and money for the user. The key component in any ice slurry system is the ice slurry generator. The ice slurry generator determines to a great extent if capital and operating costs can be saved when compared to single phase liquid HTF. The ice slurry generator is also one of the key components regarding the reliability of an ice slurry system. The capital cost for the ice slurry generator can be reduced and the reliability of it can be increased with the reduction or even elimination of moving parts. In this paper, an experimental investigation to create the basics for a development of such a capital and operating cost reducing and reliability increasing ice slurry generator is presented. The laboratory apparatus consists of a cooled 20 mm wide metal surface extending over 0.6 m in length. Advanced measuring techniques have been employed to study heat transfer during the ice crystallization process in depth.
