Improving industrial heat transfer: compact and not-so-compact heat exchangers.

Author(s) : WADEKAR V. V.

Summary

For shell and tube exchangers different designs and techniques for improving performance are discussed. The shell side improvements centre around better conversion of pressure drop into heat transfer by innovative baffle designs. The tube side enhancement techniques are briefly illustrated with an example of tube inserts. Discussions on compact heat exchangers cover various types of heat exchangers and their operating ranges, applications and their specific benefits. The principle types covered are plate heat exchangers, plate fin heat exchangers and printed circuit exchanger. Finally examples of boiling of single component fluid and mixtures are given.
