Type of article: Article

Summary

VERY LARGE REFRIGERATED SHIPS CAN BE COUNTERPRODUCTIVE IN THAT THEIR CARGOES CAN DEPRESS MARKET PRICES BY OVER-SUPPLY. SHIPS WITH UP TO ABOUT 7,000 M3 CAPACITY MAY BE MORE FLEXIBLE IN USE, MORE ECONOMIC TO OPERATE AND MORE VIABLE GENERALLY. A DUTCH FIRM IS HAVING FOUR NEW REEFERS OF 7,080 M3 CAPACITY BUILT. THESE WILL BE GENERAL PURPOSE REFRIGERATED SHIPS CAPABLE OF TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 285 AND 248 K (12 AND -25 DEG C), INCLUDING BANANA COOLING, AND WITH SPACES OF SUFFICIENT HEIGHT, (2.3 M), FOR FORK LIFT TRUCK AND PALLET OPERATION AS WELL AS BEING ABLE TO CARRY 93 CONTAINERS. WIDE LOADING HATCHES AND SIDE PORTS WILL FACILITATE EASY CARGO HANDLING AND BOW THRUSTERS WILL ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR TUGS WHEN DOCKING. BOTH MAIN ENGINES AND REFRIGERATION MACHINERY WILL BE UNDER MICROPROCESSOR CONTROL. D.W.H.
