Summary

Inverter is a process that makes it possible to vary the capacity of a compressor. In 2001, the number of "Inverter" products on the French market expanded considerably. Sales have doubled and now represent 27 % of individual air conditioning sales. Launched in France in 1990, use of the system has so far been restricted to the tertiary sector, but it is now becoming widespread. France might soon resemble Japan, where 90 to 95 % of air conditioners are equipped with an "Inverter" system. This system allows to regulate the capacity of an air-conditioning unit. It operates by varying the frequency of the electric current and therefore also the capacity of the refrigerating compressor that it supplies. By doing so, it modulates the flow rate of the refrigerant circulating inside the plant's indoor unit. The equipment's capacity can be adapted to the thermal needs of the facility, thus enabling energy savings and improved comfort to be achieved.
