Summary

This paper investigates the effect of dead volume on the performance of hermetic reciprocating compressors which are widely used in domestic refrigerators. An isentropic analytical model is presented and tested for three different dead-volume values under ASHRAE conditions with R600a as refrigerant. Attention is focused on the cooling capacity and compression work. The discrepancies between the isentropic model and the experimental results are about 5% for cooling capacity and maximum 6% for compression work. It was found that if the dead volume was increased by 4% of the cylinder volume of the compressor, the compression work and the mass flow were decreased by almost 50%.
