Summary
Rutile and anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofluids were prepared by sonication method without adding surfactants. The crystallization processes of the two nanofluids were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and analyzed by Avrami Model. It was found that, compared to the anatase TiO2nanofluids, the rutile TiO2 nanofluids were able to crystallize at higher temperatures and complete the crystallization process at faster rates. Detailed analysis of this observation was made on the nucleation rate, the crystal growth rate as well as the change of Gibbs free energy required for the formation of ice nuclei. The results showed that the types of TiO2 nanoparticles affected the crystallization temperature and the nucleation rate of water-based nanofluids to different extents mainly due to their own different contact angles, and the different crystal growth rates of the two water-based nanofluids were dominated by their unequal thermal conductivities, which was closely related to the diameter of TiO2 nanoaggregates suspended in the nanofluids.
