Summary

THE DEFORMABILITY CHANGES OF HUMAN RED BLOOD CELLS (RBC) STORED FOR DIFFERENT PERIODS AT 245 AND 77 K (-28 AND -196 DEG C) WERE CHARACTERIZED BY THEIR FILTERABILITIES AND COMPARED WITH THE COMMONLY USED RBC LIQUID STORED AT 277 K (4 DEG C). LONG-TERM STORAGE AT 77 K UP TO 9 YEARS LED TO SURPRISINGLY GOOD FILTERABILITIES, WHEREAS RBC STORED AT 245 K SHOWED A DECREASE OF ABOUT 40%.
