Summary

INSULATORS IN SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS FOR FUSION REACTORS WILL BE EXPOSED TO RADIATION DOSES OF 10 TO 100 MILLIONS GRAY, WITH MORE THAN HALF THE DOSE COMING FROM NEUTRONS. SAMPLES OF THE EPOXY-MATRIX LAMINATE WERE IRRADIATED WITH FAST NEUTRONS IN LIQUID HELIUM TO 2.5 MILLIONS GRAY, TO SIMULATE THE OPERATING ENVIRONMENT. MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES WERE SUBSEQUENTLY MEASURED AT ROOM AND LIQUID NITROGEN TEMPERATURES. RESULTS ARE COMPARED TO OTHER STUDIES OF CHANGES DUE TO GAMMAS.
