A MANUFACTURING FACILITY IN CALIFORNIA HAS EIGHT BUILDINGS ON ONE SITE. ORIGINALLY EACH HAD ITS OWN CHILLED WATER PLANT AND COOLING SYSTEM. FOLLOWING A FEASIBILITY STUDY, FUNDED PARTLY BY THE LOCAL ELECTRICITY SUPPLY COMPANY, THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IS NOW INTERCONNECTED AND SERVED FROM COMMON CHILLER PLANTS. WATER FLOW HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO VARY THROUGH THE USE OF 2-WAY, RATHER THAN 3-WAY, CONTROL VALVES, AND ONE CHILLER NOW SUFFICES FOR LOW LOAD OPERATION FOR ALL BUILDINGS, INSTEAD OF THE EIGHT CHILLERS ON LOW CAPACITY. RESULTANT SAVINGS GIVE A PAYBACK OF APPROXIMATELY 3 YEARS. D.W.H.
