Summary

IN HORIZONTAL OPERATION THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE DEGREE OF SATURATION OF THE WORKING FLUID WAS FOUND TO BE UNIFORM IN THE ADIABATIC AND COOLING SECTIONS, BUT TO DECREASE SHARPLY IN THE HEATING SECTION. THE OVERALL LEVEL OF SATURATION WAS FOUND TO VARY WITH THE HEAT INPUT AND THE CHARGE OF WORKING FLUID. WITH BOTTOM HEATING, THE SATURATION APPEARS TO DECREASE IN BOTH THE HEATING AND COOLING SECTIONS. WITH TOP HEATING, DRYING OUT OF THE WICK WAS FOUND TO OCCUR AT A LOWER HEAT INPUT THAN UNDER HORIZONTAL OPERATION, DUE TO GRAVITY.
