IN NUCLEATE BOILING AT HIGH HEAT FLUX, A LIQUID LAYER, KNOWN AS THE < MACROLAYER >, IS TRAPPED BETWEEN THE HEATING SURFACE AND THE VAPOUR MASSES. AN ANALYSIS OF THE MECHANISM OF FORMATION OF THIS MACROLAYER IS PRESENTED. A THEORETICAL EXPRESSION HAS BEEN DERIVED. THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE THEORETICAL VALUES OF THE INITIAL MACROLAYER THICKNESS AND THE EXPERIMENTAL VALUES IS REASONABLY GOOD.
