MRI-monitored cryotherapy: technical problems and possible solutions.

Kryochirurgische Therapie unter kernspintomographischer Kontrolle: technische Probleme und Lösungsansätze.

Summary

Possible technical solutions in developing a cryoprobe and accessories for use in the magnetic field of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device are presented. A glassy vacuum-insulated cryoprobe with a tip diameter of 3.5 mm was developed. Probe inlets and outlets made of polytetrafluorethylene were also fit for use in the magnetic field and in areas of heat and mechanical stress. Meanwhile, a magnetic-resonance-compatible holding arm was designed for positioning and fixing the cryoprobe during therapy. Animal testing to visualize the ice spread in the MRI device showed the high effectiveness of the system for monitoring cryotherapy.
