Optimisation of piston cylinder clearance: a mathematical approach.

Summary

The purpose of this study is to present a theoretical approach to the evaluation of the losses due to the clearance between the piston and the cylinder. The leakage between these two elements can increase the losses. On other the hand, the friction loss shows an opposite trend. The total loss appears to be a convex curve characterised by a minimum value. The final results are the determination of the optimised clearance in order to guarantee higher efficiency and the definition of a tolerance region to reduce the cost production. The theoretical results have to be compared with experiment data.
