Piping chillers to variable volume chilled water systems.

Summary

The connection of chillers to a variable-volume chilled-water system has been fraught with problems and controversy. There are three basic rules that engineers should apply in their system designs; they are based on the author's 30 years of experience with chiller connections in the field. First, chillers should still be equipped with a bypass to ensure constant flow in the chiller evaporators. Second, the bypass for the chillers must be configured to eliminate any possibility of back flow from the system return water into the supply water. Third, return water temperature to chillers operating in parallel must be the same for all the chillers. The article discusses these three rules.
