PLASTICS ARE USED FOR THE THERMAL INSULATION OF REFRIGERATORS AND COLD ROOMS: EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE AND RIGID POLYURETHANE, WHOSE PROPERTIES ARE DESCRIBED. POLYESTERS AND GLASS EPOXY FIBRES ARE USED FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF STRATIFIED WALLS, ABS RESIN FOR SOME COMPONENTS OF REFRIGERATORS. FOR STORAGE AND HANDLING EQUIPMENT (PALLETS, BOXES, KEGS) HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE IS USED WHOSE RESISTANCE TO COLD IS DEFINED BY THE VITREOUS TRANSITION POINT. THE PACKAGES FOR FROZEN AND DEEP-FROZEN FOODS ARE MADE FROM VARIOUS SYNTHETIC MATERIALS OF SUITABLE MECHANICAL STRENGTH AND PERMEABILITY. IN ALL THESE APPLICATIONS, SANITARY AND REGULATORY ASPECTS ARE GIVEN. J.L.
