Summary

Plant and animal genetic resources are very important for human life. But they have been lost rapidly as human population has grown. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries started project called the "MAFF Genebank Project" in 1985 to protect the genetic resources. The Genetic Resources Center at the National Institute of Agrobiological Resources preserves plant seeds (-1 and -10 deg C), animal germplasm and microorganism (fungi, bacteria, viruses, yeast and so on, using several methods, including subculture, drying and freezing). MAFF germplasm is distributed and exchanged.
