Purge systems for absorption chillers.
Author(s) : MURRAY J. G.
Summary
The resurgence of absorption chillers in the market place suggests that understanding some important aspects of these units will be important to their application and operation. Energy efficient, direct-fired, double-effect chillers are available from the major manufacturers, with models that provide heating and, in some cases, simultaneous heating and cooling. Some aspects regarding their operation are more significant than they were for the single-effect, steam-fired units which have been available for over 40 years. Purging non condensable gases is one of the aspects. Since these newer absorption units operate at higher temperatures, more gases are generated at higher rates within the system, placing additional emphasis on the purge system for proper operation. Effective purging is needed not only to achieve the desired exit chilled-water temperature, but also to benefit from the energy savings offered by double-effect cycles.
