TWO THIRDS ON AVERAGE OF THE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IN THE NETHERLANDS IS DESTINED FOR EXPORT. AS A CONSEQUENCE OF EXTERNAL REQUIREMENTS AND INTERNAL MEASURES FOR QUALITY IMPROVEMENT OF DUTCH PRODUCE ON LONG DISTANCE MARKETS A SPECTACULAR DEVELOPMENT HAS STARTED. IN 1979 THE VOLUME OF CHILLED CARGO FOR EXPORT WAS CA 1.5 TIMES THAT OF FROZEN CARGO. UNTIL 1990 A 5 FOLD MAY BE EXPECTED, WHEREAS THE GROWTH OF FROZEN CARGO VOLUME FOR EXPORT MAY GROW ONLY SLOWLY. THE PROTECTION OF THE NEW COMMODITIES REQUIRES CLOSE CO-OPERATION BETWEEN SHIPPER AND CARRIER AND A NEW APPROACH OF THE FORMALLY SEPARATED RESPONSIBILITIES.
