Summary

THE SCROLL COMPRESSOR WAS FIRST PATENDED IN 1886, BUT ONLY RECENTLY HAS ITS USE BEEN DEVELOPED. THIS IS DUE MAINLY TO THE HIGH MACHINING STANDARD NECESSARY TO PRODUCE THE TWO INTERLOCKING SCROLLS, ONE A MOVING MIRROR IMAGE OF THE OTHER WHICH IS STATIONARY. FURTHER DEVELOPMENT HAS ALSO PRODUCED MATERIALS FOR THE SCROLLS SUFFICIENTLY COMPLIANT TO ALLOW CONTACT DURING OPERATION, THUS SEALING THE COMPRESSION PASSAGES FORMED. ALSO TIP LEAKAGE IS REDUCED BY SCROLL EDGE SEALS. THE RESULTING EFFICIENCY OF A SCROLL REFRIGERANT COMPRESSOR IS CONSIDERABLY GREATER THAN A CORRESPONDING RECIPROCATING COMPRESSOR, AND THE NUMBER OF PARTS IS REDUCED. THIS, PLUS THE LACK OF VALVES IN THE DESIGN, SHOULD PRODUCE LESS LIKELIHOOD OF FAILURE. D.W.H.
