Summary

The charter rates for container ships increased considerably in 2003 and 2004 (up to 100% depending on the size of the ship) as the demand distinctly exceeded the supply. The demand is likely to increase by about 8.5% in 2004 and by approx. 9% in 2005. In contrast, the supply will increase to a lesser degree by 7.5% (2004) and 8% (2005), i.e. the charter rates are likely to go on rising. As a result of this development, ship owners ordered a large number of new container ships in 2004.
