Summary
Very soon after the adoption of the Building Code of Australia a special committee was formed to undertake a review of the smoke control provisions within the code. The paper provides background to the findings of this committee and as such, indicates the reasoning behind the approach taken. It highlights some of the difficulties faced and includes details of changes to the smoke management requirements for the main building classes. The descriptions are punctuated with anecdotal evidence to assist understanding and to allow comparison with previous requirements.
