Summary
Solar energy provides a way to set up a decentralized, energetically autonomous cold chain. Indeed, solar energy represents an enormous energetic potential, being freely available, pollution free and renewable, and having only two disadvantages, large variability due to astronomical and climatic parameters and small power density. Any solar refrigerating machines are the results of combining, or better still integrating, solar converters with a classical refrigerating unit. Photovoltaic panels providing electricity from the sun drive classical vapour compression refrigerators which are, today, trouble free and cost effective in remote areas. Thermal converters, using selective flat plate absorbers up to around 100°C, or vacuum or focusing collectors, can supply heat to double Rankine cycle or absorption machines, and result in a wide range of thermal solar installations. The solar coefficient of performance (COPS), fraction of the incident solar power converted into useful cooling capacity, varies from 0.15 to 0.20. The quantity of energy needed for the auxiliaries will reduce these figures by 20 to 30%. The solar costs of the thermal machines are at /east haft that of photo voltaic competitors. /n countries in the tropical and equatorial zones and for remote locations from a power grid, the use of solar energy for refrigerating and air conditioning needs is competitive with photovoltaic devices in the small power range (0.1 to 1 kW cooling capacities) because of their excellent reliability. By using thermal conversion with flat plate collectors and possibily in the near future with concentrators, it is also competitive in the medium power range (1 to 100 kW).
