Summary

THE SQUID (SUPERCONDUCTING QUANTUM INTERFERENCE DEVICE) IS AN APPLICATION OF JOSEPHSON EFFECTS: (1) DC EFFECT: THE INSULATING BARRIER ACTS AS A SUPERCONDUCTOR FOR A LOW CURRENT ; (2) < AC > EFFECT: BEYOND A CRITICAL POINT, THE PASSING CURRENT IS OSCILLATORY (HYPERFREQUENTIAL). SOME DETAILS ON THE TECHNIQUES FOR CONSTRUCTING AC (1 BARRIER) OR DC (2 BARRIERS) SQUID'S. SQUID'S MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO DETECT EXTREMELY LOW MAGNETIC FIELDS. T. CLARK (GB) RECORDED A FLUX VARIATION OF 2.10-21 WEBER IN 1 SEC. APPLICATION EXAMPLES (A) IN PHYSICS: ACCURATE DEFINITION OF VOLT STANDARD ; PROPAGATION OF MAGNETIC FIELDS FROM THE STRATOSPHERE TO EARTH ; PIEZOMAGNETIC EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKES ; (B) IN MEDICINE: BIOMAGNETIC SIGNALS EMITTED BY HEART, BRAIN, RETINA.. ; DETECTION OF IRON, OF PARTICLES POLLUTING LUNGS ; (C) CRYOCOMPUTERS (MEMORIES OR AND AND OR DOORS). THE SWITCHING TIME OF JOSEPHSON JUNCTION WOULD PROVIDE A COMPUTER 50 TIMES QUICKER THAN EXISTING UNITS (IBM CURRENT STUDY).
