STATUS REPORT ON LARGE SCALE APPLICATIONS OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY.

Author(s) : BOGNER G.

Summary

THE APPLICATION OF HIGH FIELD SUPERCONDUCTORS WITH THEIR UNIQUE ELECTROMAGNETIC PROPERTIES OFFERS BETTER OR COMPLETELY NEW SOLUTIONS OF EXISTING PROBLEMS IN ELECTROTECHNIQUES. AT PRESENT GIGANTIC SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNET RINGS, REQUIRING ENORMOUS HE-REFRIGERATION PLANTS, ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION FOR HIGH ENERGY PHYSICS. REMARKABLE SUCCESSES HAVE BEEN ATTAINED WITH MAGNETICALLY LEVITATED AND PROPULSED HIGH SPEED TEST CARRIERS AND LABORATORY SCALE MAGNETIC ORE SEPARATORS. LARGE EFFORTS ARE PUT TOWARD LARGE TURBOGENERATORS WHEREAS THE ACTIVITIES ON SUPERCONDUCTING CABLES HAVE BEEN REDUCED. CONSIDERABLE PROGRAMS ARE UNDERWAY WITH RESPECT TO LARGE MAGNET SYSTEMS FOR FUSION AND MHD. FURTHER APPLICATIONS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE FAULT-CURRENT LIMITATION AND ENERGY STORAGE.
